avie & oak - furniture makers
avie & oak was founded by Joe Ford in 2015, based in his small workshop in Solihull, West Midlands Joe makes handmade furniture for customers all over the UK.
Joe who makes and designs all the furniture is used to taking an initial idea, whether it's a simple sketch or a more detailed concept and turning it into a reality. If you would like or are thinking about having either a freestanding or built-in piece of furniture commissioned then Joe will be able to help you through the process and produce your dream item of furniture.
Along with bespoke commissions you can also find a small range of furniture and gifts in the online shop here. If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with Joe and he'll help anyway he can.
Hand Carved Lettering
With years of practice and patience our letter carving has become a skill to be proud of. All our carvings are done completely by hand using traditional tools and good old fashioned craftsmanship. If you're interested in commissioning some letter carving, whether its a carved house sign, shop sign, box, bench or anything else, please get in touch.
Design
Design is at the fore front of our furniture making, pairing materials, colours, textures and function, to create a piece of furniture that will proudly sit within its intended environment, whilst providing the perfect functionality for its intended purpose. we'll work with you throughout the design process to make sure the end result is a piece of furniture that's the pefect fit for you.
Environment & Materials
Our workshop is situated right next to a protected ancient semi-natural woodland, so we really understand the importance of the environment that our materials come from and the impact it has on wildlife. Managing our woodlands and protecting them for future generations is so important so we only ever use timber that has come from sustainable managed forests, and where ever possible we use British grown timber to help lessen the impact of carbon emissions used during importing timber. The other benefit of having a custom piece of furniture made is that it will last for generations to come, whilst it might be a little more expensive than the big furniture manufactures its quality will be far superior so less throw away furniture going into landfill. If you have any questions about the materials we use please get in touch.
Making Process
We use both traditional and modern techniques to make our furniture both beautiful and strong. Once the design and materials have been finalised we get to the part we love most, making! Every piece we make has the same amount of pride and care taken to ensure the highest level of quality and craftsmanship is achieved.
Finishes
We only use the best quality, and environmentally friedly finishes on our furniture, whether its a natural wood finish, painted, or even both we'll talk you through the best products for the intended use for the furniture. We also now offer all our painted furniture with a spray finish which results in a harder wearing superior painted finish, in any colour choice you want.
Shop
As well as our bespoke furniture we also have a small collection of furniture and gifts in our online shop. All made with the same love, care and quality materials. Our childrens stools and chairs are a particular favourite both offered with hand carved engravings.
